6 Weeks of Working from home – tips and tricks

It’s kinda crazy to think that I have been working from home for a month and a half today, it has been 6 weeks since my company decided to implement parts of its business continuity plan and send any employee who could work from home into a working from home arrangement. The support from the company has been fantastic, but it’s not to say it hasn’t been without its challenges and good as well as bad days.


Though I am no expert from working from home, I have come up with some tips of things that work for me that potentially could help you, if you find yourselves in the same situation.

Here are five tips that will hopefully help you out with these complicated times.

Space

For me it has been super important to have a designated space to work from. Ideally this would be a separate room, but as we live in a one bedroom apartment I have settled with just a designated space. The first week I had to work from home I was not prepared, the instruction came over the weekend, after we had been told to take our laptops home every day in case it was to happen. I had to start by working on our kitchen table and that was annoying in terms of having to full pack up and clean everything every day to use the table for dinner etc. I purchased a desk during that first week and set it up the following weekend and this has helped me alot.

Be realistic with your hours.

Over these past weeks I have been transitioning from some days being super productive to slow days where I have been down and unmotivated. I think independent of the type of day you are having you should set realistic realistic working hours – when you are normally working from the office you have good and bad days, productive and slow days. Try and not to feel guilty, there are so many that are going through this adaptation.

Movement

In your day to day life in an office you actually move quite a bit – to meetings, to the bathroom, to make tea, to go and have your lunch etc. Working from home I have come to realise I can get in the zone working on something and almost don’t move all day. I have had to add movement and exercise consciously into my day.

Breaks

This links into the movement. It is important to take breaks from time to time. When you are in an office this tends to happen naturally. These breaks can be a mix of short breaks while making sure you have your normal lunch break and rest your mind.


Stay connected

It’s hard to feel isolated when working from home, especially when you are used to working in an office, and even more so when your country potentially has so many restrictions around gatherings, social distancing etc. Here in Australia at the moment we cannot gather with more than one person who doesn’t live with you, while performing social distancing. Pick up the phone, video chat for a meeting, make an effort with a chat app if your company has one. I’ve found for my team sometimes over communication in the first few weeks has helped people feel more comfortable and now we are adapting to our new normal routines.

Additional – I have heard and seen so many people talking about dress for the office, dress for success etc. Apparently there is some science between this, however, for me, not one of my favourite things to do. I do make sure I get up in the morning, but I work in my newly named comfort work clothing. At the end of the day – you need to do you and find out what works for you in these challenging times.

    I am with you on the dress for the day – really not feeling it after trying it out. I need my comfort for sure!!
