6 Fun Facts about Melbourne

What better way to celebrate 6 months in Melbourne than share 6 fun facts about this beautiful city?

It’s been a wildwind journey for me, for us… finding an apartment, settling in, making friends, getting back into hobbies, supporting R with advancing his english… the list goes on. I was lucky enough to have secured a well paid job before even setting foot in Australia which made things a bit easier for sure, though it was almost, arrive and straight into work – but hey gotta pay those bills somehow right?

But all in all, we are loving Melbourne. It’s far different from Santiago, the vibe, the people, the lack of the cordillera, but still enjoying what it has to the max.

So let’s jump into the 6 facts, that you may or may not have known!

1. Melbourne was the capital city of Australia

Back in 1901 Melbourne was the capital city of Australia. This lasted 26 years before it shifted to Australia’s current Capital, Canberra (that’s right – not Sydney)

Melbourne’s famous St Kilda Theme park is the oldest privately old theme park in the world! According to their website their most popular Roller Coaster – The Great Scenic Railway, holds the title of being the oldest continually operating wooden roller coaster in the world.

3. AFL was invented in Melbourne

Don’t know what AFL is? Almost anyone from Melbourne will tell you, you are missing out! AFL stands for Australian Rules Football (or Aussie Rules). I don’t quite understand it yet, but to me it looks like a weird fusion of American Football and different types of Rugby (yes there is more than one type of Rugby).

4. Stained-glass

The National Gallery of Victoria is not only the oldest and most visited gallery in Australia but holds the world’s largest stained-glass ceiling.

5. Largest Tram network in the world

Melbourne literally has Trams galore with the network operation 24/7and it is also the world’s largest operational tram network, with 250km of double track. The network has been in operation for over 100 years and now has 1,700 stops.

6. Batmania

The city was originally going to be called Batmania, which was after one of its founding fathers. In fact Batmania was one of its interim names along with Bearbrass, Bareport, Bareheep, Barehurp and Bareberp!
